Rock Hall of Fame 2020 Inductee Podcast

2020 Rock Hall of Fame

Place listening Paris France - continues to lead the list, Mountain View, CA and San Jose CA, Amsterdam and long lost friends in Ashburn VA all checking in the top 5 or 10 places listening this week

France, USA and Netherlands are the top 3 countries - also UK, Spain, Australia, Iran, Turkey and Iraq - based on episode 299 - not shocked on those countries listening

Bad Boys for Life aka part 3, I’m all over it. Feel like it’s rare in hollywood to take like 7 years before part 2 and then like 17 more years before part 3. Both Spiderman and Batman have been rebooted twice each between Bad Boys 2 and Bad Boys 3

For the first time in 7 years the winner of the fan vote didn’t get inducted. And this year it was first time nominee, Dave Matthews Band.

Fans are up in arms, 1,000,000 people voted for them, USA Today is covering it — and frankly — I’m not a big fan of snubs — but this Manufactured Controversy is probably good for the Rock Hall’s awareness in the public consciousness.

Getting In:

Whitney Houston — the second biggest oversight of the past 3-5 years after Janet Jackson and now they are both in

The Notorious BIG - this is a no-brainer for me - but the Hall Has snubbed LL Cool J - so it’s great to see them get one right.

Depeche Mode

Nine Inch Nails

Doobie Brothers

T. Rex - they are about to spur on a spinoff podcast titled “Who is the worst act inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame”.

I voted on November 7th - My Votes were Biggie, Whitney, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden (soft spot for Cornell), Dave Matthews Band. I felt the biggest LOCK was DMB.

At the Time of My vote in November:

DMB was leading with 385,656 votes  (Only the beatles and rolling stones have had more #1 albums)

Pat Benatar was 2nd with 363,191 votes (this is a huge snub as well) - 8 gold albums from 1979-1988 including 6 straight going platinum. Her “You better run video” was the 2nd ever to be on MTV. 4 straight GRAMMYS for female performer of the year.

The Doobie Bros were 3rd with 328,435 votes  HOF

Soundgarden was 4th with 325,264 votes (first Seattle grunge band to sign to a major label)

Judas Priest was 5th with 286,131 votes

Depeche Mode was 6th with 265515 votes  HOF (arguably the best version of synth-pop out there)

Whitney Houston was 7th with 247,791 votes  HOF  (Basically invented the national anthem as a spectacle at Super Bowl 25)

8th Thin Lizzy

9th Motorhead

10th Nine Inch Nails  200,116 votes  HOF  (Godfather of pop/ industrial rock)

11th Todd Rundgren

12th T Rex 150,692 votes  HOF  (There are people saying they essentially invented Glam Rock when they left “Psychedelic Folk Music”- welp

13th Biggie Smalls 148,173 votes HOF  (Biggie is what this is all about. Larger than life persona who did his version of music at the highest level possible). He’s always listed on the mount rushmore of MC’s - he’s gotta be in. I’m stoked and shocked that they got this right.

14th Kraftwerk

15th Rufus ft. Chaka Khan 68,852 votes

Turning 40

To Quote Mike Gundy, “I’m a man, I’m 40!”

Places listening: Turkey #2, Mexico #3, Spain #4 - UK, Russia, Colombia, Philippines, Ireland, Germany, Egypt, India, France, Bangladesh, Switzerland, Dominican Republic, Libya, Senegal, Belgium and more - awesome stuff

Also - an interesting influx in the amount of downloads in Saudi Arabia lately - that’s interesting timing

You know the “birds fans” come out when we talk eagles - ambler Pa, cherry hill NJ, and philly were 3 of top 4... Mountain View Ca #3. Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir all rounds out top two cities. Three tukish cities pretty amazing

Do me a favor and subscribe to the podcast on apple podcast, follow us on twitter @gavinviano and tell 1 friend to check out the podcast

I’m going to keep grinding on this thing, trying to grow it - and when the freestyle turns 4 this january — Drew Brees (saints QB will turn 40) which means if the saints make Super Bowl, we’d have 2 different 40 years old’s start at QB in consecutive super bowls. I think it’ll happen. Also, why does nobody give Drew Brees the same “ageless wonder” credit they give Tom Brady — he’s also basically 5’11’’ - what he does is amazing

Biggest issues w jay bilas’ “restructuring of college basketball”

If we take out amateurism- what happens to “max years of eligibility” - if it’s a business- you can’t tell employees they’re too old

If we downsize division 1 - then many average teams that pad their win totals currently, will be exposed as being bad. Fans don’t flock to see bad teams.

Down sizing also makes it “minor leagues”. Americans don’t like minor league sports en masse.

College basketball being an “open entry national championship” is the best thing it has going for it. Limiting d1 teams to like 80 is bad Idea.

Only good way to downsize d1 - would be adopting soccer style promotion and relegation - and March madness would still need to be open entry- in fact it could be like the FA cup. That actually could expand March madness

Players should get to profit from their likeness. Period. Open market decides what they are worth. If they want a salary they should go to the G league or play overseas. If they’re not good enough to get endorsements and/or play in a professional league, then guess what - they’re not professional

Americans don’t like minor league sports. You remove amateurism ethos- I think you kill the mystique and kill the golden goose

I hate when 23 year olds on instagram try to give sage drinking advice to their 19 year old selves. Me at 19 vs me at 23. Listen if you can’t find an extra gear at 23, you’re doing it wrong.

The only thing that should slow you down before age 27 is lack of money and/or having a child - anything else - you’re doing it wrong.

Instagram

You’re allowed to complain a tad at 27 and then every three years after that.

Why can’t Biggie say “gats in holsters” w/o getting edited - but anyone can buy a gun. How can a country so in love w guns - allow censorship around talking about guns in  pop song.

Best rock: pop songs featuring bag pipes.

Long way to the top of you wanna rock n roll

Shipping up to Boston

Back in the highlife again

So I married an axe murder version of do ya think I’m sexy (rod stewart)

Amazing Grace (not fair)

Malibu has essentially burned down and we’re thinking about everyone effected by fires there and elsewhere.

Thanksgiving is the best holiday to enjoy with your friends and family. Enjoy!!!

Jennifer Aniston break up & Winter Olympics in Peoyong Chang hot takes

Places listening Philadelphia #1 Macungie PA #2 huntersville NC #3 Mountain View CA #4 Edmonton Alberta top international place listening

New places listening Kyrgyzstan, Haiti, Iran and the Netherlands

Just watched the third period of USA vs Canada Women’s Hockey from the winter olympics on Tape Delay — winter Olympics are tough to keep up with “out of time zone” cuz people are busier and the sports calendar is busier. Pyeongchang 2018 is 14 hours ahead of us - South Korea

Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston split up — you know what this means… Justin Theroux is BACK ON THE MARKET

Winter Olympics is home to sports that make you ask, “so how’d you get started doing that for a hobby?”

They have danger (Ski Jumping, Luge, Skelton, Freestyle skiing)

They have misery (Cross Country skiing, biathlon)

They have stuff that your grand parents could do (Curling)

I get why Norway and Canada are better than the US in the winter Olympics — but Germany (good for those guys).

Also, figure skating has judges (but why does ski jumping?) shouldn't it just be who stays in the air the furthest without crashing?

Luge has single men, single women, but only pairs for men — i mean pairs luge seems like the most frivolous sport of all time — but to not offer it for women seems ridiculous

The Biathlon folks must have a heck of a time checking their bags (clearly not a “carry on” situation with the TSA

Key West Curling Academy = Million dollar idea of the month // is there a rant of the month for Andy Maslin?

Should Ice Fishing be an olympic sport? How about ice fishing with dynamite?

NFL playoff teams as Game of Thrones characters

2018 NFL Playoff teams as GOT characters

Which fan base Eagles fans hate (of the playoff teams)

Also - playoff teams as game of thrones characters = DOPE idea

Congrats to Dan O’Brien of “Paul is Dead” on winning the Filibuster Freestyle Fantasy Football Championship

Places listening Des Moines, Iowa

Ashburn VA , Athens Greece #3

Mountain View, CA new comer in Middletown RI

A Coruna Spain - beautiful Costal / port city in northwestern Spain.

And Anchorage Alaska - we’re on the crab

Greece, Uk, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland

Ukraine, Kuwait, Lebanon, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka Saudi Arabia and Philippines

New England Patriots - Tyrion Lannister - they know everything, equally hateable and admirable - -but sometimes get too cute for their own good and/ or get beaten in obvious ways

Pittsburgh Steelers - Oberyn Martell - flashy offense could defeat anybody - but ultimately a little too predictable to exploit their faults

Jacksonville Jaguars - Bronn - finding a way to get it done via one or two skills and nothing else. Won’t be surprised if he dies at anytime - but also not surprised that he keeps living

Kansas City Chiefs - Cersei Lannister - one day they seem like geniuses, the next week they seem doomed - can’t figure out the role that they will play at the end of the narrative, but getting the feeling they’ll be central to the story

Tennessee Titans - the Sand Snakes of Dorne  - want to be interested in them, want to see their story become interesting - but in the end, they appear to be fodder for mainstream characters

Buffalo Bills - Theon Greyjoy - they’ve had an un-redeemingly bad run. They sold out their own family (playing games in Toronto), and jumping overboard on Yara aka Tyron Taylor.

nobody thinks they still belong alive - but they are and they recently came through in their darkest hour.

Philadelphia Eagles - Daenerys Targaryen- with Carson Wentz - they were seemingly unstoppable- but losing him was like losing Viscerion - only difference is he isn’t now playing for the night’s king (ahem Jimmy G is)

Minnesota Vikings - Jon Snow - seemed like they were left for dead - killed by getting QB’s hurt in practice or during games, only to find out that the answer was within them the whole time - Case Keenum is the unlikely leader of a fierce army in the north

New Orleans Saints - Jamie Lannister - all the skills but one major hindering factor - for Jamie it was losing his hand (or and terrible choice in ladies), for the saints its leaving the dome in cold weather

LA Rams - Arya Stark - have all the tools to be deadly assasins - but very young and maybe not yet ready to defeat everybody

Carolina Panthers - Sam and Gilly ? Boring but potentially important?? Hodor ? One dimensional but effective??? Gendry? Forgotten but possibly a baller ?? Daario Naharis? Flashy yes?! Important two years ago, definitely ? Important now? That remains to be seen

Atlanta Falcons - Brann Stark - all the tools to absolutely destroy everyone in their path - but seem to be missing the ability to harness their powers consistently

Most fan bases hate eagles fans, who in the playoffs do eagles fans hate the most ??

Where was the confidence level before Wentz got injured? Has it ever been higher ?

2017 Winners & Losers plus Big predictions for 2018

Winners and Losers of 2017

Places listening: Top City this week Bagong Kalsada in the Philippines, crushing it. Mountain View, CA #2 and Los Angeles #3

Dubai of the United Arab Emirates cracked the top 5 for the first time as well.

First time places — Laos, Vietnam, Luxembourg - over 27 countries listened last week — THANK YOU TO ALL, please leave a review on iTunes and please keep spreading the word

Bud light and Game of Thrones were both winners in 2017 and you need to look no further than the “Dilly Dilly” ad campaign to prove that both were winners

Losers - in some ways Micro Brews — for about 10 years the hipsters fave been leading the “Marco Brew” renaissance with Pabst Blue Ribbon — but in 2017 it felt like commercials started poking major fun at Micro Brews.

Example one — the Honey Mead Wine guy getting sent to the pit of misery in the Dilly Dilly ads

Example two - Actor Danny Trejo is in a series of Sling TV commercials - there’s one in which he’s a bartender and some yuppie guy is like i’m looking for a microbrew no, a nano brew… and he carries on, and then Danny says, I made this one in my bathtub. And the customers takes it but says something like “That’s so gross”.

HBO is a loser in some ways too — Peak Game of Thrones only highlights the following - they’ve got nothing ready to replace GOT, people are likely going to turn on GOT during it’s final season, because at least 50% of audience won’t like how it ends

Puerto Rico  is a loser of 2017— the commonwealth of Puerto Rico was decimated and so little has been done about it, that they should have the option to pick a new country to become a territory of. Or better yet, Yankee Swap style — they should get to swap “aid packages” with another part of the country that go aid this year

Also fun fact — Yankee Swaps are called “White Elephant” gift exchanges in North Carolina — and when I was in Philly it was called a pollyanna

Lavar Ball - despite how many people don’t like him — is a winner — since he came from obscurity. With that said, I’ll be shocked if he’s a winner in 2018 — i think he’s slated to be one of 2018’s biggest losers.

Winners: Rose McGowan and everybody associated with the #MeToo movement who came forward

Losers: Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey Jerry Richardson and dozens of others who clearly were abusing their powerful places in entertainment, sports, and business

This clearly goes much deeper - but from a media standpoint - does this keep going? Who goes down next? I feel like this could absolutely destroy washington is we let it

ESPN got trounced and the NFL got trounced — post peak front runners getting dismantled is a theme i think will continue in 2018

Gender Reveals and Gender Reveal / Guy in American Flag Jorts in Southie

Possible winners in 2018

Possible losers in 2018 - The Tea Party / radical right — I’m not sure if I can ever bet against republicans wholesale again — but i feel pretty good about “establishment republicans”, independents and left leaning democrats mobilizing en masse in the midterms against the Tea Party.

Joe Biden Mania — 2018 — I only hope that it doesn’t peak too early

Onesie Christmas Pajamas — the cast of Premier league on NBC are all wearing them today — the amount of matching onesie pajamas on instagram, facebook, snapchat is off the charts — i think the backlash is coming

Jimmy G and the San Francisco 49ers — if this guys stays healthy and they can sign him — as long as he stays healthy and can avoid the “Johnny Manziel pitfalls of fame” — they are going to the playoffs in 2018 and likely for most of the next 7 to 10 seasons
