True Detective Season 3 podcast (spoiler alert thru Episode 6)

True Detective Season 3 podcast - through episode 6

Going back to the concept of following the same main characters at multiple time periods in their lives was the absolute right move. This may have been the secret sauce of season  1, because this season is clever and original, but borrowing that angle is really helping.

Season 2 had nothing to do with it and of course - season 2 was a nightmare. The only thing I remember from our 2015 podcast in which you and i spoke at the end of the final season 2 episode was you starting the interview with and I quote, “It was so bad, it was so bad, it was so bad.”

I like the 3rd moment in time (old age in 2015 for the characters), in addition to the 1980 and 1990 vantage points, which are much like the season 1 time difference.

Mahershala Ali plays Detective Wayne Hays to a tee. Stephen Dorff as Roland West - great to see Stephen Dorff again.

I didn’t necessarily have a problem with the casting in season two as much as the lack of “Cleverness”.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto is also directing a lot of this season’s episodes and they’ve been good.

Season 2 came out in 2015 about 18 months after season 1 debuted in January of 2014.

HBO did a great job of giving Pizzolatto essentially 3.5 years to develop, film and release season 3. That was, I think the missing piece of season 2… they had to rush, and that killed the cleverness.

I'm not as creeped out by this season yet, but after episode 6 I kind of like where it’s going. It’s like I know where it’s going, but still think i’ll be pretty surprised. I think Hays and West are going to be seen in a really “negative light” by whatever “that thing they did” in 1990.

Fun Fact: They filmed in Arkansas near Fayetteville and U of Arkansas. Apparently Pizzolatto went to college there and wrote the episodes with that area in mind.

Carmen Ejogo as Amelia Reardon. Really like her portrayal of this character. Also interesting theories that this character is involved with the murder of the Purcell by and the disappearance of Julie Purcell.

Tidbits - the framing of the Vietnam vet Woodard biting them in 1990 with Julie’s reappearance

The mother definitely seems in on the disappearance

I feel really bad for the father , Tom Purcell, played by Scoot McNairy - tough road of it.
