Team USA , NCAA scandals & Stoneman Douglas

Places listening Uganda, Ukraine, Poland and Brunei Darussalam

Unofficial Sponsor of the week - Meat & Potatoes in downtown pittsburgh. but the whale at the distrikt hotel - no ham for eggs benny and no bloody mary mix — for brunch

WINTER OLYMPICS: Seems like 10 years ago, Curling wasn’t on the radar. It below up on TV during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Kept it’s momentum in Sochi inn 2014, and then we had a Gold Medal winning USA team in 2018 in Peyongchang

Of course the United States has embraced and risen to the top in an “activity sport”. Americans love activities / we don’t as a overall rule like exercising in the snow

We got Norway a tiny Nordic country winning all types of gold medals, especially in sports that are physically taxing (Nordic Skiing) and scary as scary gets (Ski Jumping)

Other “activity” sports that Americans would likely dominate in - Bean Bag Toss (already have seen it on like ESPN News).

Beer Pong aka Beirut. Dartmouth Pong for sure - because it uses ping pong paddles and balls already - and table tennis is a sport already

Darts would be dominated by europeans but darts = why not ? Make it an olympic sport.

But Congrats to USA Men’s Curling - that’s an awesome Surprise Gold Medal, and huge congrats to Team USA Women’s Hockey for winning the golf medal over Canada. It’s their first Gold Medal since the 1998 Olympics, and stopped Canada’s gold medal steak at 4.

NCAA scandal - coaches getting caught on FBI wiretaps discussing bribery and payoffs to steer recruits to potential destinations.

The answer to all of this could be as simple as capitalism.

Currently, athletes get their scholarship, and a small stipend some times, and that’s it. They aren’t able to make money via their likeness.

And that’s the opportunity to get the dirty money out of paying these players.

Let them become endorsers for local business in the university’s area.

Let them become endorsers for university sponsors.

Let them appear in ad’s for the local pizza shop, or if they are they great of a player, for a national pizza hut ad campaign.

It’s third party money, paying for the endorsement of a product, or for hosting a party, or for signing their autograph.  This would make Paying the players “above board”. That takes many of the “shady business men” and hangers on away from the very best (i.e. most marketable players).

Instead of players having to hide getting paid, or running payments through their uncle’s neighbor’s sister’s cousin to cover their tracks, the NCAA could spend to money they currently waste on chasing these kids, on providing them with vetted money managers.

Universities could let these elite athletes, do independent studies for course credit and submit thesis on their business plan for their brand, their development plan for their brand, etc.

Would it be perfect? No. Will it clean up everything entirely? That’s impossible to promise.

But, can we surround the best people with good, honest people, and allow them to earn honest revenue? Yes.

Can schools help these young people learn how to build their brand and manage their money, and give them course credit towards graduation? Most likely. And that just seems a lot more in the spirit of helping people develop and thrive as young adults. What’s going on now, is shortsighted, dishonest, and unfair.

Over simplified reason that Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting aftermath seems to be going very differently for the NRA.

#1 The NRA has been running the same playbook over and over again following these tragic events.

But this time, instead of fighting back with the ‘faceless NRA’ the students from Stoneman Douglas are going after the elected members who accept the NRA's money.

This has forced politicians like Marco Rubio into a tough position. And Marco Rubio is lacking in charisma, especially in debate settings and town hall typed forums.

Emma Gonzalez is on the other hand, incredibly charismatic and articulate - and equally as important, she’s armed with the truth.

But most importantly, Emma Gonzalez and her classmates are handling the aftermath of being mass shooting survivors, differently than folks in past shootings.

They aren’t sitting on the sidelines. They aren’t letting 3rd party players (on both sides fo the issue) do their typical idealogical back and forth. They are instead saying, we’re speaking from first hand experience, you can’t change our narrative, we’re not letting our classmates who perished go in vain.

Republican National Convention Coverage 2016 notes

RNC 2016  Nights 1-3 notes

Trump will be tripling down on  Authority, purity and loyalty — and framing his speech after Richard M. Nixon aka “Tricky DIck” — which is rather ironic from a standpoint of purity — also Nixon abused authority and preyed upon those loyal to him while being dishonest and disloyal to the American people.

Sean Duffy and his wife Rachel Campos-Duffy (Reality stars) — they have 8 kids  they are from Wisconsin - he’s the Rep from 7th District - campy is as campy does. Think She just called Ireland a corrupt socialist regime (from 7 generations ago) — 1) it’s a republic 2) it was a part England and the people were Oppressed.

Darryl Glenn- US Senate Candidate from Colorado — not even a sitting senator. He just mockingly quoted Obama from 2004 — it’s gonna be a long 3 nights, i hate convention sheep. It’s a sheepfest

Jeff Sessions - Sen from Alabama — Has a Ross Perot vibe - ESS eating grin at all times is in full effect

Giuliani says “thank you” 15 times in a row - not sure the crowd is that worked up over Rudy — just say thank once and move on — that’s why we have microphones

Rudy is screaming his head off - again there are microphones - Rudy’s turnaround of NYC was impressive - 1) it was 20 years ago 2) 8 million people is a smaller train than 330 million and Rudy - don’t sell yourself short — you’re a better candidate than the Donald.

The GOP is calling France our ally - back in W’s day — the called french fries “Freedom fries” — convenience rules the day.

Bob Dole looks like father time stuffed him in the trunk of this car

Trump comes out to “We Are the Champions” - Freddy Mercury can’t be “pumped from the grave”

"We’re gonna win so big”- grammatically — what’s up with this phrase?!!?

Melania Trump is much better to listen to than her husband - plagiarism aside

No former GOP Presidents aka the Bush Family in attendance

Tuesday Night of the RNC -

Mitch McConnell - I’ll give the Senate Majority leader credit — at least he can give a coherent stump speech about why he hates Hilary so much.

But Mitchy — you are the leader of the least popular Senate of all time. You cite, "Opposed North Korea and opposed Human Trafficking" as accomplishments - wow, profound stance Mitch (heavy side of sarcasm)

The Freshman Senators of the GOP — the crowd couldn’t care less — apparently the GOP still hate “Harry Reid apparently” - Sen. Dan Sullivan from Alaska - horrible public speaker — must’ve learned his technique from Alaska Stateswoman extraordinaire - Sarah Palin

Paul Ryan — he’s like the king of the “do-gooder crowd” — and he’s gonna attempt to unite the party — he’s better looking than Mitch McConnell— but Mitch is a better speaker

Is it just me or is Paul Ryan kind of sort of the bizarro twin of Ramsay Bolton

Kevin McCarthy - House Maj leader from CA — is every speaker at the Convention in the 9 o’clock hour sporting an Irish Surname - McCarthy, Duffy, Ryan, McConnell.

Kevin McCarthy mentions a “Bailout” — didn’t George W Bush happen to oversee the initual bailout??? Kevin McCarthy has been talking for 5 minutes and has yet to say anything other than a euphemism

New Drinking Game - everytime a republican says Ronald Reagan’s name and the “Shining city on the hill” comment, you take a swig - you’ll be hammered within 45 minutes

Chris Christie — does he even spend time in Trenton, NJ? Has he showed up for his day job in the past 3.5 years ??

Chris Christie — playing “trial lawyer” of the century must’ve been watching Matlock re-runs

Why did Chris Christie even run for President? If he did win, would be a no show at the White house as much as he did the NJ State House?

My fave part is when the party not in power pretends that the leadership is conducting business in a bubble. It’s like in sports — you can look great in drills, but practice ain’t a game and the JV isn’t reflective of the opposition. Russia, Syria, China, Iran — those country’s are trying to “fight their way to the top, too”… going undefeated on the biggest stage is nearly impossible — W Bush didn’t go undefeated, Slick Willy didn’t go undefeated, Ronny Reagan didn’t go undefeated, and Jimmy Carter may not have even won a game. Sorry, Jimmy.

Tiffany Trump — which of his wives is she the daughter of? Marla Maples

Trump’s second wives daughter is followed by one of his employees, the esteemed Kerry Woolard of Trump Winery — really? A person who he literally pays is speaking, yikes!

Comparing turning around a winery with the 3rd largest nation in the world — tough sell

Donald Trump Jr - father of 5 — SMARMY

Not sure Donald Trump Jr is “key note speaker worthy” of a twenty minute speech. Let’s stop saying we’re going to “help every single american” in our stump speeches - helping 300 million people simultaneously without hurting some of them due to ripple effects — impossible.

There have never been 2 worse finalists for such an important job on US soil, than there are today for this election. Can we "repost" the job listing, like they do in HR.

Wednesday night of the RNC - Rick Scott of Florida kicking it off talking about Democrats leading us to a “Cliff” vs a “Crossroads” — but the house and senate are republican held and they need to be held accountable - they are the worst congress ever.

I love when both parties say it’s time to drive all partisan banners on the stump speech trail and then immediately pick them up and hide behind them to days later.

Embracing political “incorrectness” is a really interesting stance in 2016 — but that seems to be the recurring theme. Rick Scott first time i’ve heard him speak — he’s weak public speaker.

Laura Ingraham - Might be the Smarmiest woman in America.

She’s a political commentator who just scolded her fellow press members — this lady really deserves 20 minutes??

Phil Ruffin - Casino Real Estate Investor — a casino owner telling us Donald Trump’s word is stronger than any contract — how many unpaid bills does Trump have? He also said that Chicago is a “state”. Didn’t shout out NJ or Atlantic City — wonder why?

Phil Ruffin rambles like Donald Trump, but he has no charisma, not charm, not public speaking chops — why is he on TV? This is helping.

Pam Bondi - Attorney General of Florida

Missed the astronaut, missed some lady who “hates the common core” - Van Etten was her last name.

Ralph Alvarado - first hispanic american elected to Kentucky state senator — really working the “family, church, hard work message” — pretty decent public speaker.

Everybody talks about “obeying” laws. But being “free from gov’t” - double speak

The Hubris of Darrell Scott and all of the speakers about “america being the greatest nation in the history of the world” — hate that stuff. Greece fell, Rome Fell, England fell, nothing lasts forever especially when we start believing that we are entitled to something in the future because of the past. We aren’t 3rd graders.

Here’s the other issue this notion of Donald Trump “uniting everybody” — everybody doesn’t feel the same way about our direction. You can't please all of the people, all of the time. So stop promising that. Stop treating the audience like 3rd graders.

Scott Walker — Worst hair of the convention. Horrifyingly low amount of Charisma. "America deserves Better” - yes, Scott they do — they deserve a better public speaker than you happen to be —JOKES, but not really.

Donald Trump is being set up as the Grand Uniter — and I just think that there are a lot of people who don’t want to be united.

What’s the feeling on everyone proclaiming “God bless the Trump family” — feels like we’re delving into royal family territory.

The greatest thing that Trump did during this campaign — is to Take out Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz - i tip my hat to him on that one.

Ted Cruz - I can’t say anything nice — so i’m taking a pass / literally took a shower during his speech -- OH WAIT -- I came back and Ted Cruz is NOT going to endorse Trump. Interesting turn of events.

Eric Trump - meh… regurgitation of everything we’ve already heard — better speaker than Scott Walker — will give him that.

A $330 million person nation - is not a construction site. It’s not a hotel, it’s not a casino… stop equating construction projects with the geo political sphere.

Callista GIngrich - seems to be giving Newt credentials to be Donald Trump’s Secretary of Defense pick.

When did the republicans all start wearing Blue ties? Newt did, Paul Ryan did (btw - Paul Ryan show’s up a ton).

First glimpse of Mike Pence — BLUE TIE! Good speaker and fairly self-deprecating. Dude was Democrat until “Reagan Revolution” - fun fact.

How do we decrease taxes, let everyone pick whichever school they want, increase military spending, and reduce taxes AND reduce the deficit. Sounds like a magic trick.

Which ever party loses — I think they will be better off for it — because I think either way, the winner is one and done.
